Day 7

“Cody! Archie! On me,” Hugh ordered, and the guys shouldered their rifles and ran to their dad’s side.

Like good little soldiers, Serenity thought.

She listened as Hugh gave them their orders.

“We need to construct a roadblock similar to the one we created at Uncle Oscar’s, but immovable and as indestructible as possible.”

“Yes, sir,” Cody said.

“I’d say we make it three horse trailers deep and stack round bales of hay on the inside to form a solid wall, so if they ram it, they’re gonna do some significant damage to their vehicle.”

“Where are we putting it?” Archie asked.

Hugh tugged on his beard and glanced up the road.

Jane approached them. “What about the S-curve just after the Wakelams’ place? They won’t be able to get up enough speed to ram it, and we can wedge the trailers and hay bales right up to the steep hills on both sides where they can’t go around. The only way through would be over. If they dismount their trucks, whoever is guarding the roadblock can pick them off as they attempt to climb the rocky slopes.”

“Brilliant idea, Jane. Who knew you had the mind of a tactician?” Hugh said.

Jane snorted. “I’m afraid we’ll all be tactically minded before things return to normal.”

“I hate to tell you, Jane, but that’s not going to happen.”

Jane’s expression flattened at the revelation that her old life was gone. But change was all Serenity had ever known. She’d learned early in childhood not to get comfortable where you were because the status quo could shift at a moment’s notice. She didn’t fear change. Sometimes, it was good, like when one of her foster parents was arrested for beating one of the kids in their home. All the kids were removed and got new placements. Serenity’s new foster home didn’t care what she did as long as she didn’t make trouble or ask for anything—so she didn’t. But then, for some unknown reason, her social worker showed up out of the blue and moved her to another placement with strict rules and a handsy biological son. Serenity lasted two days there before she ran away. Change could be good—but the change they were experiencing at the moment saw people being kidnapped and murdered, like Finn’s mother. Serenity didn’t know how Jane was still functioning after losing her daughter, but she admired her resolve to protect her family and community.

“I think the S-curve is the perfect placement for a roadblock. Cody, you and Archie ride home, get one of Grandpa’s Allis-Chalmers, and bring it back. We’ll use it to pull Jane’s horse trailers out there.”

“Which one? You want the D17 or D21?”

Hugh shrugged. “Both! It’ll go faster. And we gotta to move quickly before someone comes looking for these guys.”

“What are we going to do with…” Serenity resisted the urge to look over her shoulder at the man she’d shot dead. “With him and the other guy?”

Hugh turned to Jane.

“I don’t want them on my land.”

“Cody, you and Archie toss that body over my saddle and take him with you.
